A crucial step to the future

If we want to change the world, why don't we start by changing our "home"? That's what we, in Colégio Valsassina, thought. Our school in central Lisbon had new facilities since last summer. The new buildings were designed and built according to the principles of energy efficiency. Renewable sources of energy are now being used. We are on the path of becoming a Low Carbon School, the first one in Portugal.

2nd PRIZE

The future of environment between destruction and afforestation

Afforestation is unable to remedy the loss caused by negative effects of various forms of destruction on environment, whether coming from urbanization or excessive exploitation. What is dangerous is that this phenomena has become usual in all cities, internal or coastal. The first one witnesses an excessive incursion of urbanization into green areas which constitute the only breather for its population. Within the same context, and due to the lack of a sound environmental education, coastal cities disregard substantial benefits of green areas embodied in stripping coasts of trees and their replacement with buildings for quick profit. This is the bitter reality from which our environment suffers, but there is still some hope carried by the coming generation which will make reconciliation with nature through the acquisition of sound environmental education.

Man and Environment, between the jaws of pollution, in the city of civilization patrimony

The image demonstrates pollution in the city, one of the most dangerous and urgent environmental problems with serious economic, social and health dimensions. The passage of sewage inside the old medina "Fez" with Oued Sebou as an estuary which has become a discharge for industrial chemical and domestic waste, constitutes a direct danger on man's health with lack of environmental awareness. The pollution in the city is due, not only to industrial and domestic exhaust gas, but also to the excessive human abuse of resources and to metal waste discharge in waters, especially in estuaries such as Oued Sebou, a fundamental resource of drinking water. Let's correct our negative behaviors towards our environment, think about the environment dimension in development projects and work together for a sound environment in order to achieve a sustainable development.
